Landfill Inspection and Maintenance Activities

Naval Weapons Station (NWS) Seal Beach, CA

Under subcontract, GCE conducted Post-Closure Inspection and Maintenance (PCIM) and reporting activities at the Former Station Landfill, Installation Restoration Program (IRP) Site 7. IRP Site 7 is a closed landfill that is approximately nine acres in size and located near the southeast area of NWS Seal Beach.

The primary objective for this PCIM was to perform two years of inspections of the landfill cover, including the drainage and the vegetation, and maintenance of these elements. The work included, but was not limited to: inspection of the landfill cover, drainage, and vegetative cover following heavy rainfalls; documenting any damage, settlement, ponding or erosion of the landfill cover; and recommending and conducting the necessary repairs to the cover and the vegetation, in accordance with the approved PCIM Plan. A total of eight inspections (four per year) were conducted, with at least four of the inspections occurring directly after heavy rainfall events. Following each inspection, appropriate inspection forms were completed by the project team and submitted to the Navy along with recommendations for repairs and maintenance. Two annual reports were also prepared documenting the inspection results and maintenance activities and any repairs that were implemented during that period.
