Building 189 Drainage Improvements

Naval Air Facility (NAF) El Centro, CA

GCE served as a subcontractor to perform engineering design and construction services required to resolve flooding issues at Building 189 on the existing airfield at NAF El Centro, California.

Once the GCE design documents were completed, GCE construction crews removed approximately 400 tons of soil for characterization and transport to a landfill in Imperial, CA. Once the excess soil was removed, GCE performed construction staking to properly place all the precast concrete catch basins. Once the catch basins were installed, GCE installed the 6-inch and 12-inch diameter PVC piping to interconnect the catch basins and re-direct the stormwater. Upon installation of the underground drainage system and surrounding retention basins, GCE graded and compacted the subgrade surrounding Building 189 to the proper design elevations. The reinforced concrete was then installed by the prime contractor. To complete the project, GCE graded the earthen drainage swale to direct stormwater to the existing airfield drainage system. Final clean-up work involved striping a parking area north of Building 189 and providing concrete parking bumpers and signage.

Once construction was complete, GCE prepared and submitted complete As-Built plans to Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest and NAF El Centro.
