Repair Elevated Water Towers

Yuma Proving Ground (YPG), Yuma, AZ

As the Prime contractor, GCE was awarded a task order to complete the repair and rehabilitation of six carbon steel water storage tanks: two 145,000-gallon capacity ground-level fire suppression water storage tanks, one 50,000-gallon capacity ground-level raw water storage tank, one 50,000-gallon capacity ground-level potable water tank, one 500,000-gallon capacity ground-level potable water storage tank, and one 5,000-gallon capacity horizontal hydropneumatic tank.

The project consisted of various combinations of repair and rehabilitation measures, including replacement of existing impressed-current cathodic protection systems, replacement of existing sacrificial anode cathodic protection systems, replacement of failed tank floors, repair or replacement of existing liquid level indicators, interior blast and recoating with 100% solids epoxy coating system, repair or replacement of existing corroded structural components, exterior touch-up with two-coat epoxy/polyurethane coating system, and repairs to existing tank appurtenances. The project required sampling, testing, and analysis of interior and exterior finishes for the presence of lead-based paint. Spot lead abatement and hazardous waste disposal was necessary to complete the repairs. Temporary water storage, bypass piping, and final cleaning and disinfection of potable water tanks were also required. GCE strictly adhered to the project schedule since it was of utmost importance to complete the project during months of low water use.
